OK, so you know on livejournal sites such as "appletooth" or "untanglemyworld" where if you click the comments link, there are a bunch of icons? How do you do that?

I don't understand your question. How do you do what?
Use the icon? : clicking on the icon should allow you to use it.
Add the icons? : You'll probably find the link to the site that the user used to get that list of icons onto their page. All you'll have to do is copy the code, go to your journal profile/layout and paste.
